Elevated systemic inflammation, in turn, can blunt the body's sensitivity to leptin and insulin—two hormones that regulate hunger, satiety, and fat storage. Additionally, an imbalanced oral microbiome can affect nitric oxide production—a molecule synthesized when beneficial oral bacteria convert dietary nitrates (found in leafy greens and beets) into nitrites. Nitric oxide supports cardiovascular function, regulates blood pressure, and plays a role in cellular energy metabolism. When harmful bacteria crowd out the nitrate-reducing species, this conversion pathway is impaired, potentially reducing energy availability at the cellular level.
